New Year’s Resolutions

posted on 10.12.2023

MetLife 360Health team provides tips to help you create meaningful New Year’s resolutions that you’ll actually keep. Here are the tips:

  1. Choose something that is important to you, not what others want you to do.
  2. Be specific about what you want to achieve to increase your chances of success. For example, instead of “I’ll eat healthier,” try “I’ll cook an average of three healthy recipes a week between January and March.” Remember, as a REI Super member you have access to a qualified dietitian to discuss your nutrition and wellbeing goals and build a personalised plan through the MetLife 360Health Nutrition Service.
  3. Break down your resolutions into smaller, achievable goals. For instance, instead of running a marathon by the end of January, try building up to running 5kms first. You can also speak to our team of Accredited Exercise Physiologists to help you develop a plan. Remember, being specific and breaking down your resolutions into smaller goals will increase your chances of success.
  4. Stay the course. Find ways to remind yourself of your goals any chance you get. Write your resolution on sticky notes and hang them where you’ll see it most often — mirrors, doors, inside the fridge. Consider sharing your resolutions with others to find an accountability partner — this way, you can tackle similar goals with a friend.
  5. Don’t punish yourself for setbacks, if you’re unable to meet smaller, daily goals sometimes. If you oversleep one day and miss a workout, don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t give up. Enjoy the extra rest — then work extra hard the next morning to get your workout in. And, if you succeed in sticking to your routine schedule for an entire week, reward yourself. Even something as small as buying a coffee can be the perfect way to reflect on your success and celebrate hard work.
  6. A final tip on how to keep your New Year’s resolution: remind yourself of the bigger picture. Making a lifestyle change can be difficult, so seek out ideas and advice from others who have successfully reached similar goals.

Set yourself up for success this year by choosing meaningful, actionable goals that will improve your overall wellbeing. Stay committed to smaller, attainable benchmarks throughout the year to bring about real change in your life.
